Earlier this summer, Bethesda shocked the world during their E3 2018 press conference. Even though the Elder Scrolls VI, Fallout 76, and Rage 2 were arguably the key titles that the gaming community focused on from Bethesda during E3, Doom Eternal provided an exciting teaser of what is to come after the positive reception of 2016 reboot. Although Doom (2016) and Rage were announced for Xbox Game Pass early yesterday afternoon, a potential leak from Microsoft revealed that another Doom announcement would occur at QuakeCon 2018.
Two days ago, a Reddit user by the handle DesertofBoredom posted to Reddit proclaiming that Doom (2016) would be joining the Xbox Game Pass starting on August 10. When questioned about this announcement, the user would cite an Xbox promotional email stating to “Check you promotional emails for xbox, it’s right at the end of the most recent one. Bunch of stuff about madden, black ops 4 beta, overcooked 2, inside xbox, something about a white controller, deadpool 2, better call saul new season, and then right at the bottom it says doom to be added to gamepass 8/10.” Although the post could just be rumor, USGamer was able to provide an image of the supposed email.
Prior to yesterday afternoon, Fallout 3, The Elder Scrolls Online, Fallout 4, and The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion were the key Bethesda titles available to download and play as part of the Xbox Game Pass. During the first day of QuakeCon 2018, Bethesda announced that Doom and Rage would be joining the Xbox Game Pass program (8/10). The addition of Doom (2016) to the Xbox Game Pass program allows newcomers to experience the reboot of the franchise while allowing fans to return to the franchise before the release of Doom Eternal. In the past, Gamers are more likely to play a game when it is free or part of a subscription than when they must pay for it. The addition of Rage will allow players to give Bethesda’s dark sheep a chance before the release of Rage 2 in Spring 2019.
The Rage 2 E3 demo displayed that ID Software has learned from their past success with Doom and improving the Rage franchise with what people loved about Doom. If the E3 2018 teaser is any indication as to what ID Software has to offer, Doom Eternal will bring players to Hell on Earth while potentially providing double the amount of demon variations to kill for glory; from the trailer we can speculate that Arch-Viles, Arachnotrons, Barons of Hell, Cacodemons, Imps, Pain Elementals, and Revenants will play a role in Doom Eternal.
