It seems that most youtube reviewers have their schtick, the one thing that they focus on that helps make them them. There’s your Playstation guy, there’s your completionist guy, there’s your Angry guy, well let SuperDerek be your RPG guy. SuperDerek started his channel when he was looking for rpg related content to watch on youtube and didn’t find it, and then continued to not find it for awhile. His response was then to buckle down and provide the content he was looking for. Starting off with shooting with an iPad, SuperDerek has since grown his channel and capabilities to create a show that is reliably clear in it’s delivery of reviews.
SuperDerek faces a unique challenge in the pursuit of reviewing RPGs, depending heavily on story, and stories have endings which means he sets out to finish every game he plays which in some cases means well over the 15-22 hour mark that many games fall into. Sometimes putting in over 70 hours to makes sure that he delivers the best in depth review possible. I for one commend him greatly, I’ve had to review two lengthy rpgs myself this year and in both cases putting in the sheer amount of time required to feel like I could review it properly posed to be quite the obstacle. I can’t imagine being dedicated solely to the genre!
On his channel you can expect to find in depth reviews, delving into every aspect of the game. While he tends to cover JRPGs, he’s no stranger to the occasional western RPG either. These reviews span games across all systems, and generations. During our interview we discussed how he got started, the challenges of reviewing rpgs, our thoughts on the current RPGs, job hunting, tabletop rpgs, and the social media aspects of YouTube.
This interview was recorded awhile ago, and since then overall he’s maintained a consistent release schedule, the channel is grown at a good rate, and is currently in the process of a major move! He’s added a discussion podcast and an RPG news series to his video lineup! However it seems the move has had it’s definite struggles, so go check out his videos to help him and his wife get through the gap between videos while they finish it.
