PAX South will be here before we know it. With roughly three months before the first big show of 2019, the PAX team announced the keynote speaker. Cory Barlog, director of this year’s well received God of War, will be in from Santa Monica Studios to deliver the Friday morning “Storytime” opener for the show.
A long time industry veteran, Cory joined Sony in 2003 and was the lead animator for the original God of War. He went on to write and direct God of War II, for which he won a BAFTA award for writing. After GoW II, he continued to contribute as both writer and Creative Director on God of War: Chains of Olympus and God of War: Ghosts of Sparta. He then left Sony in 2009 to spend some time at LucasArts, Crystal Dynamics, and other ventures before returning to Sony in 2013. (And has excellent taste in baseball teams! – Aaron)
“Doing a sequel to a beloved game is a unique challenge, and so is rebooting a franchise for a modern audience – Cory Barlog has done both,” said Jerry Holkins, co-founder, Penny Arcade. “We’re overjoyed to have him join us at PAX South. If I get the chance, I’m gonna tell him about this place I know in San Antonio where they make the guacamole with Orange Juice instead of Lime. It sounds crazy, but it works.”
Several members of Marooners’ Rock are planning to attend PAX South this year, including this writer, who has no idea where this place is that makes guacamole with O.J. rather than limes. That sounds like heresy. Delicious, delicious heresy. Oh, right, where was I?
Cory Barlog is a great keynote choice, and I’ll be looking forward to catching his talk. For folks who can’t make it to San Antonio, all of PAX’s major events are normally streamed on their Twitch channel, allowing interested gamers the world over to enjoy the talks.
