What if when you took the headset off, some part of the virtual world was still there, just hanging around like an unwelcome house guest? That’s the central plot of Our World Is Ended, the hit Japanese visual novel just announced for a western release by publisher PQube.

From the game’s description: “The game tells the story of Judgement 7, a young team of game developers based in Tokyo, who make a shocking discovery: While testing their latest game engine using augmented reality headsets, part-time director Reiji catches a horrifying glimpse of a seemingly destroyed cityscape. Neither did they program, nor animate this – but how is this possible?”

Our World Is Ended is set in Tokyo’s Asakusa district. As players navigate the adventures of Judgement 7, they will find themselves visiting a number of Tokyo’s most recognizable places. With the Judgement 7 team seemingly trapped somewhere between the real world and the virtual world that they’ve been developing, they’re now the only ones capable of fixing this crisis. Our World Is Ended 1

The game features an interactive dialog choice system called “Selection of Soul” or “S.O.S.” which allows players to react and see how their next choice may effect the upcoming dialogs. There should be around forty hours of gameplay in the final game, making for a lengthy visual novel. Publisher PQube calls this a great entry point into the visual novel genre for players who have never tried one of these games before. With the PS4 and Nintendo Switch releases, it will also be one of the most accessible VNs.
