FractalSoftworks has announced that its exemplary top-down, tactical space combat game Starsector has received a massive update! If you are a fan of strategy, role-playing, commanding massive fleets, or simply blasting enemies to flinders with heavy ordinance and lasers, then you should absolutely check this out!

Starsector is, at its core, a sandbox game. Set adrift in the Perseus Arm of our galaxy, the player begins by choosing what kind of commander they want to be. Will they focus on leadership, tactics, and crew morale? Are they more interested in technology? Or are they more invested in their own piloting? Regardless of the player’s choice, the game allows for plenty of flexibility as you wander the void, allowing you to adjust styles on the fly. As you hop between stars, planets, and space stations, you will encounter pirates, trade conglomerates, and several military powers scattered throughout space. You can purchase other ships and hire crew as you move forward or simply salvage what you can from those who try to prey on you or from those whom you prey on in turn.

Maybe you prefer to work alone. Maybe you hope to gain a following. Perhaps you seek wealth through trade, creating a fleet of cargo ships and support fighters. Maybe becoming a bounty hunter catches your fancy. If you so choose, though, you could also become a military power strong enough to crush any factions that oppose you. It all depends on your desires and acquiring the skills necessary to claim them!

This latest update brings a multitude of new features that ought to furnish hours upon hours of new gameplay! Just some of these are:

  • Colonies: That’s right, you can form your own colonies! That means that you have to protect them too, though.
  • Personal Factions: To go along with the colonies, you can make your own organization and establish its military doctrine!
  • Blueprints: Finding blueprints will allow your colonies to produce their own ships, weapons, and fighters.
  • Hitting the Bar: When you dock in one port or another, you might hit up the local knowledge for any missions or opportunities available.
  • Orbital Stations: These behemoths are like floating castles, reigning destruction upon all who draw too near. With their introduction, you can now fight alongside them or tear them down from their foundations.
  • Raids: You can raid core worlds in each system and plunder their wealth or otherwise disrupt your competition.

FractalSoftworks also hinted at the possibility of exploring planetary ruins and encountering various, unspecified dangers in the furthest reaches of the sector. Those are simply a few of the features released to us and it is now up to us to discover them!

While the official game has not yet launched, Starsector has been around for quite some time. Originally named Starfarer, this game’s Alpha launched in 2011. Even then, lacking many of the features that the current Starsector has, the game proved entertaining, challenging, and immersive, earning a multitude of fans and followers who have supported FractalSoftworks ever since. We are on the edges of our seats, waiting for whatever will come next to this phenomenal title!

You can pre-order Starsector here for early access to all of the game’s features before its launch at a discount.
