Obsidian Announces “The Outer Worlds” at VGAs

Welcome to the Future. Try not to Break it!

Obsidian Announces “The Outer Worlds” at VGAs

Every year a slew of new games are announced during the VGAs some are expected while others are not. Among those announced this year is The Outer Worlds. Obsidian, best known for their in-depth RPGs that include Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic 2, Neverwinter Nights 2, Pillars of Eternity, and as touted in the trailer below “From the Original Creators of Fallout” and “Developers of Fallout: New Vegas”. Which may be shots fired at Bethesda who are still recovering from the overall lackluster reviews of Fallout 76 and the pre-order bonus canvas bag snafu. The timing seems rather fortunate for Obsidian, right when gamers are craving a first-person sci-fi RPG experience. With a release slated for 2019 gamers may not need to wait long. By the looks of the trailer, The Outer Worlds looks well into its development.

Showing off an impressive number of landscapes, creatures, characters, and vehicles, the trailer shows off a decent sense of humor too. The Outer Worlds trailer heavily implies strong player choice and the overall narrative. A habitable planet on the edge of space experience major change as corporations take over and sell back at high prices. The rest of the settlers lay abandoned, waiting to be rescued.

The Outer Worlds feels like if you took Fallout and combined it with Borderlands with a dash of Bioshock. Fallout fans have been craving a more RPG experience which has been missing in the franchise’s latest outings. Obsidian devs are masters of their craft and look to deliver on that level in spades. Plus they’ve proven themselves to be able to handle first person and sci fi experiences with Fallout: New Vegas. Earlier this year I reviewed Obsidian’s Pillars of Eternity 2 and am excited to see what they do with The Outer Worlds.

There’s a lot to look at and breakdown here, especially for an announcement trailer! The Outer Worlds has people excited and the trailer has well over 2 million views in only a couple of days. Are you excited for this new adventure from Obsidian? What is something you want out of a game like this? Let us know!

The Outer Worlds is coming to PS4, Xbox One, and Steam in 2019!
