I know. It’s the question that’s been asked numerous times over the last 2 to 3 years. Every big convention many gamers and media outlets always ask, “Is Gearbox going to finally reveal Borderlands 3 at…?” At every E3 and PAX convention, we are proven to be wrong. Well, I think it’s safe to say PAX East 2019 is finally the time with some recent news.
Gearbox is no stranger to PAX East, as they have attended for many years with their own panel. The PAX site was recently updated to describe what fans can expect at the Gearbox Main Theater Show. The most notable quote being, “We will have never-before-seen reveals, exclusives, and surprises, so don’t miss out!”
Now we’re sure Gearbox is working on other projects. There was an announcement last year from Gearbox stating they are working on a new IP, which was code named “Project 1v1.” We have yet to get any new information regarding that, so that could potentially be showcased. Also, Gearbox has reportedly been working on a new Brothers In Arms entry. I’m sure these games will get their chance in the spotlight, but let’s face it, the fans truly want a new Borderlands game. Publisher 2K Games had announced last year that 2018 that a “highly anticipated new title from one of 2K’s biggest franchises,” would be scheduled for 2019. BioShock was a suspect after this, but many are believing it to be the next Borderlands.
Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford is also careful with the words he chooses to use, as the next Borderlands is always described as “that game everyone knows we are working on.” He did say, however, that around 90% of the Gearbox team is working on it. Pitchford also said that the next Borderlands game will be announced when it is ready. I like to think that they are pulling a Fallout 4. In 2015 Bethesda finally revealed the next Fallout game at E3, but also surprised everyone by stating it was going to be released that same year. I, for one, like this idea, as the game would finally be officially announced, then fans would get it not much longer. I’d hate to see the game get announced this year and it says “Borderlands 3, Fall 2020.” Instead, it would be short period of time that keeps the hype contained, rather than die out (I’m looking at you, Days Gone).
If, in fact, Borderlands 3 is showcased at PAX East this year, then we will definitely be there to let you all know!
