Announced today, GUNNAR Optiks will be bringing a new lens to the PC/Gaming glasses market which boasts a significant increase in blue light blocking. Dubbed the “Amber Max”, these lenses have a BLPF (Blue Light Protection Factor) of 98. BLPF can be thought of similar to the SPF number found on sunscreens. For comparison, GUNNAR’s amber lenses have a BLPF of 65, while their clear lenses have a BLPF of 35.

GUNNAR is introducing the new Amber Max lenses first in their popular Intercept frames. As we noted in our past review of the special edition Tom Clancy’s The Division 2 Intercept glasses, the Intercept frames are large, comfortable for all day wear, and good looking in a chunky retro way. The Intercept glasses also remain available with the existing Amber and work-play tint options.GUNNAR Optiks Intercept Frames With Amber Max Lenses

“Eye protection is a critical factor in our overall health helping regulate the body’s circadian rhythm allowing for a proper sleep cycle to be achieved. Blue light interferes with melatonin, the hormone that helps us feel tired at night and with our digital devices becoming an essential part of our lives, it’s harder to avoid exposure to blue light,” said Dr. Miki Zilnicki, OD at Twin Forks Optometry. “Protective eyewear with lens technology such as GUNNAR’s Amber Max lens plays an important role when protecting from the effects of blue light to make sure eyes remain as healthy as possible. Additionally, macular degeneration, the leading cause of blindness in the United States, can be caused by extended exposure to artificial blue light, which is GUNNAR’s number one concern.”

For gamers who tend to favor long, nocturnal play sessions, not screwing up our eyes and sleep cycles even worse should be a priority.

“We’re excited to introduce our strongest blue light blocking lens, paired with our most popular GUNNAR frame style, the Intercept. The new ‘Amber Max’ lens shields the eye from artificial blue light that disrupts our natural sleep patterns,” said RJ Snyder, Director of Marketing at GUNNAR Optiks. “The ‘Amber Max’ lens is the perfect solution for anyone highly sensitive to blue light or prone to nighttime digital device usage.

The Amber Max and Intercept combination is available now on GUNNAR’s website for $69.99.
