We finally got confirmation by Square Enix that they will be showcasing the new Marvel’s Avengers game at their E3 2019 panel. It has recently been revealed that the game will offer both a single player and co-op experience.
While it has since been taken down, the description on the E3 Coliseum Schedule for their showcase originally stated the following.
“Embrace your powers and join key members of the development team at Crystal Dynamics and the creative team at Marvel Games as they talk exclusively about the upcoming Marvel’s Avengers. This is the defining Avengers gaming experience: an epic action-adventure that combines cinematic storytelling with continuous single-player and co-operative gameplay. Moderated by Andrea Rene, assemble in teams up to four players, master extraordinary abilities, customize your heroes to fit your playstyle, and combine powers to defend an ever-expanding world under constant threat.”
Not long after this was discovered, it was then changed to a very simple description.
“Join Crystal Dynamics and Marvel Games for a Panel about Marvel’s The Avengers.”
Still, we now know what we all wanted to know. The new Avengers game will be a single player game that offers co-op. Speculation was crazy about this game. Many concerns were that it was going to be Marvel’s own version of DC Universe Online. Luckily, it looks like Marvel’s Avengers will not go down the MMO route. From what it looks like, it appears that it will be similar to X-Men Legends. In the PlayStation 2 classic, players were given the opportunity to play a large roster of X-Men characters. The game offered co-op play, but it also let players create their own parties of different X-Men.
It’s no surprise that this is being announced right after the Avengers: Endgame storm has ended. Endgame went on to become the 2nd highest grossing film of all time. The epic conclusion was a culmination of 21 films, spanning over a large cinematic universe. It’s obvious that Disney isn’t done with the MCU by any means, but Endgame still felt like a true ending. This leaves them open to doing more with the Marvel name, specifically video games.
One of the biggest hopes is that Marvel’s Avengers will tie into 2018’s Spider-Man PS4, creating a brand new gaming universe. The world of Spider-Man did acknowledge that the Avengers existed, as players were able to climb the Avengers Tower. The logistics of a Marvel Gaming Universe does seem like a nightmare. The games would be made by different studios and publishers. We can only hope that we’re right!
The Square Enix panel will be shown live on June 10 at 6 p.m. PT.
