Sony has just announced June’s free games for PlayStation Plus members. Starting June 4, Borderlands: The Handsome Collection and Sonic Mania will be free to download for PS Plus members.
The announcement of these two titles is stirring up excitement. May 2019’s PS Plus games received negative backlash from members as the titles were not all that exciting. That’s not to say they were bad games by any means. What Remains of Edith Finch is one of the most moving tales ever experienced in a video game. Overcooked is a silly yet addicting couch co-op game that’s fun for the whole family. Still, these were small indie titles that seemed lackluster compared to Xbox’s Games with Gold lineup each month.
The announcement of Sonic Mania is sure to drive anticipation. The re-release of the 2D retro platformer garnered many positive reviews. Those who did not originally buy it will now be able to experience it in all its nostalgic glory. It also includes brand new stages that can be experienced in competitive and cooperative modes!
Borderlands: The Handsome Collection is the remaster of both Borderlands 2 and The Pre-Sequel, including all of the DLC. The Handsome Collection becoming free to PS Plus isn’t all that surprising. It was only a matter of time until Gearbox did this as it would be a great way to bring in new players who never got into the series. They will want those new players ahead of Borderlands 3 releasing in September 2019. Still, it is curious timing that it will be free in June. June is, of course, E3 month.
It was recently rumored that Gearbox is planning to release a new DLC expansion for Borderlands 2 titled Commander Lilith and the Fight for Sanctuary. PlayStation Lifestyle appears to have received news that it would be released during E3 2019. This rumor has yet to be confirmed by Gearbox or Take-Two Interactive. It would make sense to release the game for free in order to garner more sales of this rumored expansion. Bungie did the same thing with Destiny 2, offering it for free on PS Plus right before their Forsaken expansion released.
