During my time at PAX West 2019, it was full of excitement, games, and so much more. While it was quite a busy time of seeing indie games and more. I got to head over to the Dot Emu booth to check out some titles that really caught my eye. As you can guess already by the title, those games were Streets of Rage 4 as well as Windjammers 2.
Streets of Rage 4
I walked away from the Streets of Rage 4 demo with THE BIGGEST smile on my face. Not only did the game meet my expectations, it blew them away with loads of punches and kicks. The folks at Guard Crush Games know exactly what they are doing. Not only is this a modern beat-em-up, but it’s one that is built with a fighting game mentality. Characters and special moves can combo into one-another. Enemies can wall-splat and bounce back into juggle combos. It was like playing a fighting game that moved.
The updated visuals are super crisp and the animation is flawless. After a quick intro level and boss battle the dev snuck me into a level further into the game. Each environment looks amazing and the soundtrack is rocking.
Make sure you grab a friend and load up Streets of Rage 4 when it comes to consoles because I can promise you this game will be amazing to play with a friend sitting next to you.
More information on Streets of Rage 4 can be found on the official website.
Windjammers 2
I’m going to admit that I never played the original Windjammers. After playing the Windjammers 2 demo at PAX West though I am kicking myself for not getting into the original. It’s a simple concept really. Think of it like Frisbee tennis. Players fling the disc across the field and attempt to score in one of three scoring zones. If a disc is flung your way, you can block it, catch it, and build up a super meter to unleash a devastating attack.
Visually there didn’t seem to be much of an upgrade from the previous version of the game. That being said, it ran super smooth and the controls were incredible. There are three new characters and three returning.
If you have fights nights, or just want something silly, yet challenging to play with friends then be sure to grab a copy of Windjammers 2 when it releases next year.

PAX West was definitely full of things to dive into to the point that we are still sorting through loads of hands-on demos and interviews. We did recognize six indie titles recently for our PAX West Best Indie Game Awards and our Best Games category is coming soon.
