Awhile back now Level 5 and Studio Ghibli teamed up to make the distinctly unique JRPG, Ni No Kuni Wrath of the White Witch. Featuring the visual appeal of Studio Ghibli’s films, a phenomenal majestic soundtrack, and a unique combat style, it was hard to miss. It stood out among even other JRPGs that were popular at the time. Overall receiving a positive reception from critics and gamers, Ni No Kuni cemented itself as a favorite game for many, prompting a sequel that came out last year. The game being only available on PS3, however, was a bit of a roadblock for some. That changes now with Ni No Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch Remastered for PS4 and Steam, and a port of the original game on Switch.
The HD remaster for PS4 and Steam boasts full 1080p visuals at 60 fps and PlayStation 4 Pro users can go with 4K resolution at 30 fps or 1440p at 60fps. It doesn’t seem these enhanced features are available for the Steam release.
The Switch port is not enhanced, playing at 720p at 30fps both docked and in handheld mode, so keep that in mind if deciding to go with the Switch version. I was provided with a review code for the Switch port and my thoughts can be found here.
Ni No Kuni follows a boy named Oliver into a whimsical land full of puns, interesting characters, and a large number of monsters to collect. He aims to defeat the evil Shadar and bring hope back into the world by becoming a powerful wizard. Luckily, Oliver’s strongly Welsh accented fairy friend Drippy, the “Lord High Lord of the Fairies” is there to help him!
