Doom Slayer, thy time is nigh. Prepare to reap all that stand in your way. Vanquish the forces of evil and bring fear to the hell mouth. At the start of October Doom Slayers around the world eagerly awaited the release of Doom Eternal. With a little over a month’s wait ahead of them, the November 22nd release date could not come fast enough. Sadly, slayers around the world will have to wait a little bit longer.
Earlier today, id Software announced that Doom Eternal has been delayed. At E3 2019, Eternal was Bethesda’s key E3 title. Now, less than two months away from the games official release, it has been delayed until March 20th, 2020. This announcement comes as a major blow to Bethesda fans after a weak E3 showing. Despite a four-month setback, a new preorder bonus has been announced for the beloved violent franchise. Doom 64 will now be free to those who pre-order the game. Below is the official announcement by ID Software regarding the game’s delay.
ID Software Announcement!
Throughout the development of DOOM Eternal, our goal has been to deliver a game that exceeds your greatest expectations across the board.
To make sure we’re delivering the best experience — for DOOM Eternal to live up to our standards of speed and polish — we’ve made the decision to extend our launch date by a few months to March 20, 2020. We know many fans will be disappointed by this delay, but we are confident that DOOM Eternal will deliver a gaming experience that is worth the wait.
In addition to shifting the DOOM Eternal launch date, we’ve made a couple of other changes we wanted you to know about:
- Invasion Mode, which will allow you to enter another player’s game as a playable demon, will release as a free update shortly after launch.
- DOOM Eternal for Nintendo Switch will release after the other platforms. We will announce that date in the future.
- DOOM 64 will be available on Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and PC in addition to Nintendo Switch. We are adding DOOM 64 as a pre-order bonus for DOOM Eternal on all platforms so you’ll be able to download and play this classic game, for free, just for pre-ordering DOOM Eternal. DOOM 64 will be released on March 20, 2020, on all platforms.
We are grateful to every DOOM fan for your dedication and support – we can’t wait to rip-and-tear right alongside you.
Benefits of Delay
The delay of Bethesda’s upcoming title is rather disappointing but we support Bethesda and Id Software’s decision to delay the game rather than put out an incomplete game. If the E3 demo is anything to go by, Doom Eternal will surpass the 2016 version of Doom. The ID Software team seems to be taking out a page of the Dark Souls playbook by introducing Invasion Mode. Will you wreak havoc in other Doom slayers worlds or will you let them be? Doom Eternal will release on Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Google Stadia, Nintendo Switch, and Window’s PC on March 20th, 2020.
