A few years ago now a phenomenon happened on Twitch that in some ways changed how we think about the platform, and video games in general. It simultaneously managed to answer the important question of could a room full of monkeys smacking away at a Gameboy beat Pokemon? Twitch Plays Pokemon spawned countless memes and created a sense of “I was there when” in those that watched and participated. The whole thing was equal parts absurd and absolutely fascinating. This led to more Twitch Plays events of other Pokemon games and even Dark Souls. Well, it seems the latest venture in the genre is Twitch Plays The Outer Worlds. Hosted by the official Obsidian Twitch channel, leading to the release of the game on October 25th it seems they want to give excited players a taste of the game. One. Input. At. A. Time. And of course, submitted by hundreds of other people trying to get that same taste.
This particular Twitch Plays is interesting considering no one knows what to expect from this game. Since no one has beaten it the general consensus of the crowd cant work as well together towards a common long term goal. This is made even more difficult by the fact that there are always those actively working against the common goal, which perhaps in this particular situation may end up being helpful? Since this is many people first exposure to the game navigating the world and making choices, and of course action based combat make this nearly the opposite of that age old original Pokemon run.
At the time of writing I witnessed a conversation, successfully killing three wild dog looking alien creatures, reaching Level 3, and of course plenty of opening and closing the menu, jumping in place, and stabbing at nothing. Oh, Twitch Plays I forgot how entertaining you could be.
