Usually, Power Rangers games do not get continued support, often being developed and released quickly. Yet, that trend has appeared to die out as more focus is being given to recent games. This is the case with Power Rangers: Battle for the Grid, a 3v3 fighter similar to Marvel vs Capcom. Battle for the Grid recently launched a new patch, adding PS4 to the crossplay pool, online lobbies, and spectator mode. This combined with additional characters to enrich the roster makes Battle for the Grid a surprising title for fans of fighters and Power Rangers as a brand. Now is a perfect time to jump back in or check out the title anew.
Reaching v2.0, the latest update adds a few features aimed at being more friendly to online play. After downloading the update, PS4 players can take on the rest of the community, combining the player pools of Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, and Steam. Up to eight players can also now hang out in an online lobby where up to four matches can run simultaneously. Anyone waiting for a match can also spectate. Power Rangers game nights are bound to be much smoother now.
“We are proud to be able to offer POWER RANGERS: Battle of the Grid players more content and features over the past several months. With the latest update, the game is now exactly what we had envisioned when we started creating the title knowing that players will enjoy all of the competitive features, immersive story-lines and wide range of characters and arenas that make the game one of the best fighting games available.” – Taehoon Kim, co-founder, and CEO of nWay
Since launch, the team at nWay has doubled the cast of characters, added a Story Mode, inserted voiceover from several original cast members of the show, connected players through crossplay and cross-progression, and tightened up online through a direct match.
I’ve always enjoyed the Power Rangers and it was the franchise that I first remember seeing as a toddler. I used to obsess over the toys and the super-cool Green Ranger, who I later met as an adult at Otacon in Baltimore, MD. I actually got sucked into nWay’s mobile title Power Rangers: Legacy Wars for a time after the most recent film but I always thought the cool character models were wasted on a mobile environment but it must have done well enough for nWay to get to develop this title. Now that Battle for the Grid has evolved into something better, I’m eager to jump into it. Hopefully, my thirst for something truly amazing in the Power Rangers game space will be satisfied. I’ll have my thoughts on that experience soon.
Power Rangers: Battle for the Grid is available now for $19.99 and additional content can be purchased separately or packed into seasons or all together as a Collector’s Edition. The game is available on PS4, Xbox One, Switch, and Steam. Limited Run Games also developed a Mega Edition and Standard physical release that are no longer available for purchase but could be found secondhand.
UPDATE 2/5/20 – The 2.0 Update is officially live on all platforms. A new trailer has been added to this post.
We will be reviewing Power Rangers: Battle for the Grid on PS4 soon, coupled with a giveaway for copies of the game. Copies of the game and DLC were provided for the purpose of content creation.
