Larian is once again making their way to a PAX event! Featuring their massively successful Kickstarted board game based on the Divinity Original Sin video game and recently announced that they will be doing a Baldur’s Gate 3 gameplay reveal! Baldur’s Gate 3 has been in development for a few years now and is slated to come out later this year. Originally made by Bioware, the Baldur’s Gate games received high critical and fan praise. It has been 20 years since Baldur’s Gate 2 came out and Larian seems to be excited and committed to making a game that meets the reputation set by their predecessors.
Releasing fairly regular videos of production and having a lot of fun with them too with costumes and scenes to show that they are definitely having fun working on the game. In many ways, it seems like this is a bit of a dream project for the studio. Working on a new major installment in a series that helped solidify the CRPG genre that Larian is now so well known for making games in. Another departure from much of Larian’s games is this looks like it’s going to take a more cosmic horror approach featuring the dreaded Mind Flayers.
The video starts out with the game’s director, Swen Vinke, in full plate armor holding a bottle declaring boldly they have found the secret sauce of Dungeons and Dragons and everyone cheers. Then cutting to various stages of production, mo-capping voice actors, environmental design, capturing the combat movement, and various beautiful locations. Meanwhile underneath is some fantastic composed and recorded epic music. Swen then returns to announce that Baldur’s Gate 3 gameplay reveal will happen at PAX East.
“We are on an adventure to make the best RPG ever” – Swen Vinke, Founder of Larian Studios and Director of Baldur’s Gate 3
On February Thursday 27th at 8:30PM GMT/3:30PM ET 1,000 PAX East 2020 attendees can see the presentation live or for those less fortunate they can tune in online to Larian’s official Youtube channel to see the Baldur’s Gate 3 gameplay reveal! Swen Vinke himself along with a special guest will be on stage to talk more about the game’s story and mechanics followed by a Q&A session. Above and beyond that Larian will also be serving up live gameplay presentation following the reveal.
DISCLAIMER: While this is of course the plan, with the recent announcement of Sony pulling out of PAX East 2020 (which includes highly anticipated Naughty Dog’s The Last of Us 2) due to Corona Virus concerns, keep a regular eye on everything related to who and what will be at PAX East 2020.
Larian is shooting to create a truly next-generation RPG providing hundreds of hours of content and hope to provide surprises for fans of both Baldur’s Gate and Divinity Original Sin games. We will find out soon what approach Larian is taking to this beloved franchise. Considering the originals were mostly high fantasy and used the now-archaic THAC0 system of AD&D will they try to utilize the currently extremely popular DnD 5E or use another system. Will it be the traditional pause and command mechanics we are familiar with in Baldur’s Gate, the more tactics based mechanics that Larian used in Divinity Original Sin, or will they do something completely different?
You are burdened with a great power devouring you from within.
How far down the path of darkness will you let it take you?
The fate of Faerûn is on your party’s shoulders.
Will you carry it to salvation, or descend with it to hell?
Are you excited to return to Baldur’s Gate after all these years?
