We live in an era where there is an abundance of video game merchandise. It’s not unusual for toy companies like LEGO and Mega Bloks to team up with video game companies. We’ve seen Mega Bloks sets of both Halo and Pokemon. We’ve also seen LEGO sets based on Overwatch and Minecraft. Today The LEGO Group and Nintendo have unveiled the truth behind their teaser trailer posted earlier this week. Something unexpected to say the least.
The two childhood icons have announced an official partnership, starting out with a new line of interactive LEGO sets. All of the sets are inspired by the Super Mario series. This partnership not only involves the sets themselves but the technology behind the new Mario LEGO figure. This interactive Mario figure can tally up coin totals, all while still being fully made out of LEGO bricks. This is a brand new experience that crosses over the world of Super Mario into LEGO in a unique way. The LEGO Mario figure appears to have multiple small-scale screens. This will allow for the real-time coin counter, as well as giving Mario much more expression in his eyes and mouth.
Collecting coins, spinning through challenges and completing levels – it’s all part of the new LEGO® Super Mario™ play experience. Designers from Nintendo and the LEGO Group have worked together to bring LEGO Mario™ to life in a way that completely reimagines the world of physical LEGO building.
Chief Marketing Officer, Julia Goldin, of the LEGO Group says, “We are very excited to bring Mario into the physical world through interactive and social LEGO play… With this experience, we will help millions of kids with love for Mario to engage and play in a completely new way, where they are in control of creating and playing games with their favourite character. By seamlessly incorporating the latest digital technology, LEGO Super Mario is a highly social, interactive and collaborative experience for kids.”
While there is no word on an official release date, we can expect more information later this year. To learn more about the LEGO Super Mario Playsets, visit the official LEGO Super Mario page.
