If there’s one series I’ve wished to see come back with fresh ideas, it’s Mega Man Battle Network, a series of titles which was (mostly) an RPG spinoff of the Mega Man franchise that had more than ten entries when counting dual versions. I loved this spinoff quite a bit, but more for the incredible manga by Ryo Takamisaki, Mega Man NT Warrior, which also had an anime. I even owned the physical PET device from Battle Network and a small collection of battle chips because I was obsessed with virtual pet toys such as the Digimon digivices, Skannerz, and the various Tamagotchi pets. One Step from Eden from Thomas Moon Kang (published by Humble Bundle) looks to be taking the reactive action of the Battle Network series much farther by continuing the deck-building strategy and adding in rogue-like mechanics.
Again, I’ve only played a few of the Battle Network GBA games, so whether or not certain features in One Step from Eden are a brand new thing for this style of game or something original is a mystery to me. What matters is the framework found in Battle Network was so full of potential that it excites me for One Step from Eden.
For starters, One Step from Eden can be played in local co-op, a feature that is all too precious right now with much of the world sticking to their homes. There’s also a ton of replay baked into it with nine characters to choose from with unique abilities and kits. For those that want to test their skills against other players, there is local PVP for head-to-head battles. Of course, most players will be going through the randomly generated levels, building their decks, and meeting new characters. This is all wrapped in a pleasant visual style with a bumping soundtrack.
Overall, One Step From Eden looks like a fun time and I’m excited to give it a go soon. Although, I have a feeling that once One Step from Eden starts to ramp up in difficulty it will be a super tough title to master so mileage may vary.
Humble Bundle’s game publishing has been on fire of late with Temtem making waves in early access, A Hat in Time being an absolute joy, and Void Bastards becoming one of the more popular titles on Xbox Game Pass. They’re also doing the hilariously titled pony fighting game Them’s Fightin’ Herds which started as a fan project and has evolved into something original. Needless to say, Humble Bundle is killing it.
One Step from Eden is available now on Switch and Steam for $19.99 USD and more information is available on the official website.
