Lucasfilm has announced two big, upcoming Star Wars projects: An as of yet unnamed film and an untitled series for Disney+. Directing and co-writing the script for the film will be Academy Award winner Taika Waititi. His co-writer will be another Academy Award winner, Krysty Wilson-Cairns. Emmy-nominated writer Leslye Headland will simultaneously act as the writer, executive producer, and showrunner for the upcoming Disney series. Furthermore, The Mandalorian is now in post-production for season two, as are two other Star Wars series.
What Little We Know
As of yet, neither project has a title nor any release dates. We don’t even know what the subject matter will be! While details on the projects themselves are scarce, we can at least hope for some great things from the people involved!
Taika Waititi: Mr. Waititi recently won Best Adapted Screenplay for Jojo Rabbit, which follows a young boy living in Nazi Germany whose imaginary best friend is Hitler. Strangely funny while moving and fairly disturbing, Jojo Rabbit certainly earned its reward. If you have not seen this film, I would personally recommend it highly. Waititi also directed the season finale episode of The Mandalorian, so he is already fairly accomplished in the Star Wars franchise.
Krysty Wilson-Cairns: Ms. Wilson-Cairns is a similarly lauded screenwriter. She was nominated for an Academy Award (which in itself is a big deal) for the three-time Oscar-winning film 1917 and again for Last Night in Soho. 1917 also earned her a BAFTA Award for Outstanding British Film of the Year.
Leslye Headland: Ms. Headland earned her Emmy nominations through her work on Russian Doll and Bachelorette. Let’s just hope that she can write science fantasy as well as she works with drama!
Additional Star Wars News
As mentioned before, The Mandalorian crew is very close to finishing and releasing season two. Two previously announced Star Wars series are in similar readiness. One of those projects is based on Cassian Andor’s life before Rogue One. The other series will finally shed some light on what Obi-Wan Kenobi was doing in those years between Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope.
