This week has not been the best for Ubisoft. While combatting sexual allegations, multiple executives stepping down, and game footage leaking, Ubisoft had their work cut out for them this weekend. Yesterday afternoon, Ubisoft held their Ubisoft Forward event to showcase their upcoming line up of games. Prior to the event, gamers knew they would be seeing footage for Assassin’s Creed Valhalla and Watch Dogs: Legion. Two days before the event, a listing for Far Cry 6 appeared on the Hong Kong PlayStation Store. Not even 24 hours later, one of the trailers Ubisoft planned to share during Ubisoft Forward leaked. Talk about a rough start.
Despite all the controversy and leaks, Ubisoft went into Ubisoft Forward with their usual confidence. After previously confirming the game’s existence, Ubisoft unveiled Far Cry 6 officially. The next installment in the Far Cry series is scheduled to come out on February 18th, 2021 for PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X, Xbox One, Stadia, PC (via the Epic Games Store and Ubisoft Store), and Uplay+. If a player purchases Far Cry 6 on the PlayStation 4 or Xbox One, you will not have to pay for a version of it on the Xbox Series X or PlayStation 5.
The Narrative
Far Cry 6 will feature a two-player mode and the game’s story will take place on the island of Yara. According to Ubisoft, Far Cry 6‘s Yara is “the largest Far Cry playground to date and a tropical paradise frozen in time”. The developers have spoken about taking influence from Cuba which inspiration is notably drawn from. In the first cinematic, we see Giancarlo Esposito’s Anton Castillo interacting with his son Diego. As the dictator of the island, Castillo tells Diego that he is “following in his bloody footsteps” as he attempts to restore his nation back to its former glory.
The player has the opportunity to choose the gender of the protagonist Dani Rojas. Dani is a guerilla soldier fighting for the freedom of Yara. The player is tasked with creating “makeshift weapons, vehicles, and Amigos. Amigos are the new weapons for hire to burn the tyrannical regime to the ground.”
