Kalypso Media has made their boarding call known as Spacebase Startopia is now in open beta on PC. The space station management video game is now slated for release this coming Fall on PC with consoles versions to arrive later. The beta has officially gone live, and offers a a bevy of tutorial levels and single-player missions for players to sink their teeth into as they await the final launch of the game. More content will be added via updates, leading up to the game’s launch. For pre-orders, there are two editions. The Standard Edition of Spacebase Startopia while the Extended Edition comes with a variety of in-game items and a soundtrack.
Having played Spacebase Startopia at PAX WEST in 2019, I was amazing at the level of accessibility and humor featured in the game. The visual style and overall vibe of the game was reminiscent of quirky and humorous science-fiction, such as Futurama. The UI and instructions were easy to understand and excellent to grasp for beginners and those unfamiliar with base building games. However, there was plenty for experienced persons to dig into, with the various parts and systems necessary to successfully run a space station. I had a good time adjusting systems and acquiring parts, and could easily see myself spending many hours aboard a donut-shaped station. A synopsis for the game is below.
