It’s been a long and prosperous road for Psyonix. Five years after the release of Rocket League , Psyonix has announced that Rocket League is going free-to-play for all users across all players. This announcement comes with a variety of new features and changes, greatly expanding upon the accessibility of Rocket League.
The news comes from Max Parker, an editorial manager at Psyonix, who goes into detail on the PlayStation Blog. The shift to free-to-play is in the reflection of the varied and wide audience that Rocket League has attracted. Rocket League has attracted millions of players, with 40 million players by the beginning of 2018. Altogether, Rocket League has sold over $10 million copies, becoming an esport in the process. Despite the mammoth competition from free-to-play games and competitive online games, Rocket League continues to do very well with players.
The free-t-play shift begins with a new update this week, preparing the game to receive the September 23rd update that shifts the title into a free-to-play configuration. On of the biggest highlights is cross-platform progression, meaning your stats, wins, inventory, and Rocket Pass progress amongst all available platforms. This means that players can play on PlayStation, then subsequently continue their progress of Nintendo Switch. Additionally, the update will feature competitive tournaments and game-wide challenges. Game Wide Challenges allow the player to earn more xp through specific challenges, while Competitive Tournaments allow the player to put their skills against the best of the best. Finally, Rocket League will have a Season One and New Competitive Ranks. The season will be in sync, no matter what platform Rocket League is played on, and there will be new ranks to attain.
The free-to-play Rocket League update will deploy on all platforms on September 23rd.
