Dr. Strange to join Spider-Man 3

The sorcerer supreme is about to reunite with the old webhead. According to a Hollywood Reporter exclusive, Benedict Cumberbatch is set to star alongside Tom Holland in the upcoming Spider-Man 3, serving as a mentor not too dissimilar to the way Tony Stark and “Nick Fury” had in the previous two films Spider-Man Homecoming and Spider-Man: Far From Home, respectively. The move follows an announcement about Jamie Foxx returning as Electro. The film is set to be directed by Jon Watts.

Save for the castings of Cumberbatch and Foxx, not much is known about the third installment of the Sony/MCU franchise, though the news of Strange joining the cast may provide the rumored exit strategy for which Feige had been rumored to be looking, given the complicated business arrangement between the two studios.

A Magical Reunion

From the moment it was announced that Robert Downey Jr. was going to do a 10 million dollar extended cameo, I had always hoped Dr. Strange would join Peter for one of his solo adventures. Growing up, I had always loved the Spider-Man animated series and my absolute favorite moments always had to do with the interactions between Strange and Spidey. I was so happy we got to see the chemistry between the two in Infinity and really wanted to see more. With any luck maybe Doctor Strange will take care of the problem presented by the end of far from home, which involved J. Jonah Jameson outing Peter as the web-slinger. Obviously, my ultimate dream would be to somehow see Garfield and Maguire on-screen with Holland, though I’m not exactly holding my breath for that to become reality even if we do seem to be heading into the comic book movie multiverse via Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness. Regardless, I can’t wait to see Cumberbatch mix it up with Tom Holland again when the film hopefully arrives in theatres on December 17, 2021.
