Fans of survival city-builder game Frostpunk are about to have a whole new way to experience the challenge of managing the last city on Earth. Launching on Kickstarter today, Frostpunk: The Board Game is now live and ready for backers.
Designed by independent author Adam Kwapinski (best known for designing Heroes, Lords of Hellas, InBetween, and Nemesis), Frostpunk: The Board Game aims to provide a standalone, entertaining experience enjoyable both by those who haven’t played the video game, and by Frostpunk fans alike. The game is playable solo, or cooperatively for up to four players. As leaders of the last survivor’s colony, players become Social, Health, Generator, and Resource Advisors. The key to success is efficiently managing both the citizens and the infrastructure. Frostpunk‘s iconic generator is represented in the board game with a highly detailed plastic cube tower miniature.
Frostunk: The Board Game key features:
- Different player roles ease the learning curve which allows newcomers to enjoy the game.
- Innovative heating and generator cube tower mechanics with a custom-designed system of cube-catching and risk management.
- A worker-placement mechanic where your meeples get sick and hungry and have ethics and social demands!
- Narrative-driven Dusk card mechanics steer the society using Law and Technology and bear the consequences of in-game decisions.
- A fascinating mix of snow-apocalypse and steampunk worlds to be discovered through expeditions deep into the Frostland.
- A companion app that allows for shared playthrough between distant players.
One of the major stretch goals for the Kickstarter campaign will be the creation of a companion app allowing players to enjoy multiple copies of the game together in a shared virtual environment while remaining physically distant. Given how difficult it can be to get a board gaming group together sometimes, this seems like a winning plan, even when the world isn’t stuck in Corona-time.
“The concept of the companion app is unique and revolutionary in the tabletop gaming space. Kickstarter is meant to fulfill dreams, so let’s reach the goal and see what magic we can unleash.” – Jakub Wiśniewski, CEO of Glass Cannon Unplugged.
Ultimately, players will face many of the same choices as in the video game. Balancing societal growth and happiness with the needs of energy and city expansion will inevitably provide challenges. Players will have to make moral choices and sacrifices throughout the game if they want their city to succeed.
