Godzilla Singular Point Coming to Netflix

Godzilla is about to get animated once again. GKids has announced that a brand new anime entitled Godzilla Singular Point, based on the iconic Toho monster, is coming to Netflix in 2021. This iteration, featuring a new cast, and a new story, will be directed by Atushi Takahashi. Studio bones will be behind the animation.

Godzilla Singular Point is the latest entry in a franchise that originated from the 1954’s Godzilla, directed by Ishiro Honda and starring Akira Takahata. Since then the character has spanned across not only mediums but also continents.

Growing up, I had watched a lot of animated shows that served as a take on a recent big-screen success. Such examples included Beetlejuice, Addams Family, and of course Godzilla. At the time, I hadn’t even realized that a lot of these existed due to the films. I just enjoyed them for what they were. I can still vividly remember watching both the 1978 and the 90s animated version of Godzilla. As much as I liked a lot of the live-action stuff in recent years, particularly X-Men, screenwriter Michael Dougherty’s arguably whimsical Godzilla King of the Monsters-the animation will always have a special place in my fandom heart. As a result, whenever I hear about Godzilla making a return to the medium, where I first discovered him, it is always something to keep an eye on. Especially with Bones involved. Whether you’re talking about My Hero Academia Fullmetal Alchemist, Ouran High School Host Club, or even Cowboy Bebop, creator Shichiro Watanabe’s Space Dandy, their work is always a highlight of the work displayed on the screen. Will it have the retro feel of the animated Godzilla I grew up with? Probably not, but I’m really excited to see what they do with this classic movie monster.

More information on the upcoming Godzilla anime can be found on Netflix’s official page.
