It’s time to go postal once more, as developer Running with Scissors announces Postal: Redux for the Nintendo Switch. In one of many surprise announcements being made recently, Nintendo is getting violent, bloody, and mature with the release of Postal: Redux, an infamously action-packed and violent shooter.
Postal: Redux is a high-definition remake of Postal, an isometric twin-stick shooter released in 1997. Players play as The Postal Guy, a man who has seemingly lost it and begins a bullet-filled quest through his neighborhood to stop the government. From quiet streets to malls and military bases, The Postal Guy will stop at nothing to fulfill his mission, even if it means pouring bullet holes into everyone and everything. The original game was known for its depictions of violence and tight gameplay, as well as its comedic, apathetic protagonist who would perform vile deeds just to make a point. Over the decades, the franchise would gain a following for its extreme visual design and gameplay. The character would spawn an entire franchise, which continues to this day with Postal 4: No Regrets and the newly announced Postal: Brain Damaged.
“Over 20 years ago, we had no clue the impact POSTAL would have had on society and gaming history.” said Vince Desi, founder of Running With Scissors. “POSTAL coming out on SWITCH is our dream come true. On behalf of everyone at RWS we give thanks to our fans for the many years of support. We’re just getting started.”
Postal: Redux was originally released in 2016 for PC but for the release on Nintendo Switch, several adjustments and enhancements are being made. The release for Switch will be optimized for the platform, and also includes all previously released DLC. New to the re-release is a Rampage Mode, where players go for the highest of high scores against endless waves of police and soldiers. Of course, now, players can bring the carnage anywhere they go as it is now on the Nintendo Switch.
While Nintendo is no stranger to violent action video games, the release of Postal: Redux certainly raises a lot of eyebrows. Whereas Doom and Wolfenstein depict fictionalized depictions of extreme violence, Postal: Redux is more rooted into the real-world. Neighborhoods and towns are the battlegrounds and everyday persons become the enemy. There are no aliens or rayguns or science-fiction conspiracies. For that, Postal can hit a little too close to home in being realistic, especially given the recent rise of civil unrest and the many mass shootings that have occurred in recent years. Therefore, it’s both ironic but fascinating that Nintendo gives the green light for the game’s release on its more family-focused platform. Perhaps Nintendo is taking off the gloves in allowing more hardcore content onto the platform, especially as the next generation of gaming systems slowly dawns upon the gaming masses.
