John Barrowman has been a fan favorite in multiple series for years in large part due to his time on Doctor Who. First appearing in 2005, Barrowman’s Captain Jack Harkness would become a fan favorite and delight fans when on-screen; his popularity in the series would cause the spinoff Torchwood to be created that would air from 2006-2011. After the series ended in 2011, it appeared that Barrowman’s time in the Tardis had come to an end. Thankfully, this has proved not to be the case with John Barrowman set to return to Doctor Who.
Despite Barrowman moving on to Arrow in 2012, the actor has always held out hope that a return would be possible; Arrow producers assured him that he would have time off should executive producer Steven Moffat call him about appearing in 50th anniversary alongside former co-stars David Tennant and Billie Piper. When a return failed to materialize for the big event (Jack merely being referenced), fans began to wonder whether the beloved character would ever be seen again.
Finally, in season 12, fans got their wish when Harkness appeared before the doctor’s companions with a warning for the doctor. This appearance felt a bit anticlimactic. After years of waiting for the character’s triumphant return, we get one scene that served as little more than a set-up for the future with little to no idea when or if the character would return. However, fans are about to see the payoff from the brief appearance, as Jack is set to make his return.
What’s to Come
Deadline Hollywood reports that Barrowman will reprise his iconic role alongside Jodie Whittaker’s 13th Doctor for the special. With the Doctor locked away, it’s going to be up to Captain Jack to save the day.
Holiday programs have always been of special significance in Doctor who, so it makes sense to have Jack return for an event like this. Let’s hope that we get some answers when the episode premieres this Christmas! Are you excited to see Jack again? Let us know on our social media pages!
