Fans of Masahiro Sakurai’s Super Smash Bros. franchise were promised a reveal during yesterday’s Game Awards. Whenever a character reveal is announced, fans always tend to go all out on their predictions. While many, including myself, predicted Sony’s old mascot Crash Bandicoot, I think many were shocked by the actual reveal. RPG fans can rejoice, as Final Fantasy’s Sephiroth was confirmed to be joining the Super Smash Bros. Ultimate roster.
The former accoladed soldier Sephiroth is not only one of the main antagonists of the Final Fantasy series, but also Cloud’s archrival. Thematically, Sephiroth’s inclusion makes complete sense. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate almost has a hidden rivalry theme. While represented franchises feature the series’ main protagonist and antagonist. Sephiroth’s inclusion marks the second Final Fantasy representation in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate and the third Square Enix character.
Sephiroth being Cloud’s nemesis adds a bit of depth that Final Fantasy VII fans will appreciate. Everything Sephiroth stands for is the polar opposite to that of Cloud. This contrast could be incorporated into Sephiroth’s move set in very interesting ways. While the reveal trailer did show off gameplay, Sakurai announced another special stream. On December 17th at 5 PM EST, Sakurai will show off a more in-depth look at Sephiroth’s move-set.
Sephiroth is scheduled to release later this month. For more information, visit the official Super Smash Bros Ultimate website.
