There can never be too many spaceship shooters. Brazilian-based Loomiarts, along with Assemble Games and China-based publisher WhisperGames, have announced their dimension-bending spaceship shooter Squadron 51. After several years in development, this inspired spaceship shooter makes its debut on consoles and PCs for all to enjoy.
The news comes from public relations firm Uberstratgist via a press release. Squadron 51 is a spaceship shooter, which is an extremely common genre, but what separates Squadron 51 from the rest of the genre is its focus and inspirations from classic 1950’s science fiction. Squadron 51 draws its inspirations from a large portfolio of classic sci-fi films, such as Godzilla, Dr. Strangelove, and War of the World by H.G Wells. Aliens arrive on Earth in peace, bringing new hopes to humanity. This veil of peace is soon unraveled with the realization that the aliens have paired with the Vega Corporation and the malevolent Dr. Zarog. With evil afoot and treasonous acts committed, Squadron 51 rises to defend the Earth. The shooting in Squadron 51 can be compared to the surreal spaceship shooter, Sine Mora with its slower pace and grand visual scope. In between stages are old-fashioned FMV scenes with English dubbing, and a solid sci-fi plot involving heroism in the face of intergalactic villainy. While 2021 has just begun in the realm of video games, Squadron 51 is looking to be the game to keep on your radar.
The key features of Squadron 51 are below:
- SHMUP Yeah!: Enjoy classic shoot-’em-up gameplay with four unique aircraft that can be customized with special weapons
- Cinematic Experience: Marvelous black-and-white aesthetics, live-action FMV sequences, and dubbed voices will tell the story of the battle between Squadron 51 and Director Zarog’s alien fleet
- 11 Ways to Save the World: Fight against enemy ships and bosses in 11 different environments – snowy mountains, forests, cityscapes, and more
- Rookie Pilots Supported: Whether you’re a beginner or a veteran flying ace, Squadron 51 supports dynamic difficulty that allows every pilot to enjoy the alien extermination
