Like a lot of 90s kids, Batman The Animated Series was a huge part of my childhood. I still remember watching every night when I was a kid. As I played with my Batman action figures, I would be enthralled with the likes of Two-Face, Poison Ivy, the Joker, and even the Dark Knight himself. However, as much as I loved the titular character, the thing that really attracted me to the show was the noir aesthetic. For whatever reason, I couldn’t get enough of it and made me want to escape into that world of pulpy superheroics. In the Batman: The Animated Series documentary, Heart of Batman, Creative Director of Animation Mike Carlin distilled this idea even further referring to the series as an homage to the Warner Bros. gangster film; an idea that had particularly resonated with me, considering I had written my thesis on the gangster film. A decision that could probably be traced back to my time watching Bruce Timm’s iteration of the character. Over the years I had always hoped we’d get more from this universe, something we actually got in the form of the comic, Batman: The Adventure Continues from writers Paul Dini and Alan Burnett with art by Ty Templeton. While this was great, I really wanted more episodes. Well, it looks like we might get our wish courtesy of HBO Max.
On a recent episode of Fatman Beyond, hosts Marc Bernardin and Kevin Smith alluded to the possibility of a Batman The Animated Series sequel. While there was no word about whether Timm and Co. will be involved with the potential project, Smith noted that an entire generation had been inspired by the show and that it would amazing for someone new to put their mark on this seminal iteration of the Dark Knight.
While reporting on rumors can be a bit tricky, given the fact that this comes from the auspices of Smith and Bernardin, it’s fair to say that something might be coming down the road especially because next year marks the 30th anniversary of the series. Don’t be surprised if this gets confirmed sooner rather than later.
