In X-Men Origins Wolverine, Ryan Reynolds gave us a glimpse of what the Merc with the Mouth might be like on screen. In the years that followed, fans anticipated his solo film. With the help of some test footage, the first standalone Deadpool film finally made it to the big screen in 2016 and was quickly followed by Deadpool 2 in 2018. Although Fox had more plans for the iconic hero- including the X Force and more Deadpool-centric sequels- the Disney-Fox merger put a pin in that, leaving everyone left to wonder whether we would see Ryan Reynolds as the titular role again. The announcement of the Molyneax sisters writing the script provided some bittersweet hope for fans. Finally, it looks like we have official confirmation courtesy of Marvel Head honcho Kevin Feige.
In a recent interview with Collider, the prolific producer confirmed that the film, which won’t begin filming this year, will be rated R and will be set inside the MCU as opposed to a separate universe as previously alluded to by Disney’s Bob Iger.
Deadpool 3 maintaining the R-rating is great news! While they had briefly flirted with R Rated material with the Marvel-Netflix shows they have yet to take that chance on the big screen and signals that Feige is ready to step into new territory cinematically, which can only bode well for properties like the upcoming Blade starring Mahershala Ali While at first glance it may seem like the latter news is a bit surprising, this works out just fine, given Deadpool’s love of breaking the fourth wall. The audience will have no problem accepting Reynolds as part of the MCU.
