I was a huge fan of the Fox TV show Gotham, so when I heard that a new Gotham TV show was in the works, from Boardwalk Empire’s Terence Winter, I was intrigued.
All too often spin-offs of movies tend to get less attention than their cinematic counterparts (i.e. the incredibly underrated Bad Boys spinoff L.A.’s Finest) in recent weeks however DC head Walter Hamada made it clear that HBO Max is an integral part of their strategy going forward arguably emulating Marvel’s upcoming slate in the regard. Unfortunately, Winter left the project over creative differences a few months ago, much to the chagrin of long-time fans like myself; who were looking forward to seeing Winter work in the DC Universe. This had been par for the course when it came to Winter in recent years when he and HBO couldn’t come to terms on which direction to go in for Vinyl season 2 subsequently leading to cancellation before new showrunner Scott Z. Burns could finish season 2. While this won’t be the case for Gotham PD, This new era of DC storytelling has to be perfect right out of the gate so it was probably for the best they found whose vision aligned with theirs. It looks as though they have done just that.
Deadline reports that Joe Barton will take over as showrunner of The Batman prequel series. The upcoming series is set one year before the upcoming Batman reboot which will see Robert Pattinson under the cowl. Barton’s eclectic resume makes it seem like he’s a great choice for Gotham PD. Rather it’s the Netflix/BBC crime drama Giri/Haji to the underrated AMC and BBC co-production Humans, Barton’s made it clear he’s able to bring something fresh to a variety of genres. Here’s hoping he makes Gothamites proud.
