2020 has been an interesting year for gaming. Sadly, many Indie games did not receive the recognition or acknowledgment that they deserve; thankfully, games like Hades, Carrion, Fall Guys, Mortal Shell, and Among Us were able to show the importance of the Indie Genre. With most PAX events canceled in 2020, only a few titles had the opportunity to be previewed by the public. This year, we reviewed Double Kick Heroes, Pumpkin Jack, Doodle Derby, and many other Indie titles. The first time that I saw The Waylanders was during an Extra Life charity event. Now, the game is set to receive a massive update to its preview build.
So what is The Waylanders? The Waylanders is a classic party-based RPG; the game can be played from either a 3rd person perspective or a top-down view. The game was created using Baulder’s Gate, Dragon Age, and Pillars of Eternity as inspiration. The preview version of the game has received rather mixed reviews. The ones who feel disappointed with the game state that the game does not have enough back story depth.
Today Gato Salvaje Studio has announced a new update coming to The Waylanders to fix just that. In their latest update, new origin stories have been added to the game. The Alpha Wolf, Celtic Soldier and Druid, Dog of Ares, Egyptian, Mourian Diplomat and Protector, and Semi-Fomorian have received origin stories. In addition to new character origin stories, a Photo Mode has been added to the game to allow players to show off beautiful locations located throughout The Waylanders.
Director’s Thoughts on Origins
Gato Salvaje Studio Creative Director, Serio Prieto, stated,
“The Waylanders has been heavily influenced by many of the best RPGs we’ve played over the last few decades. Part of creating a character shouldn’t just be what they look like, but also where they’re from and how they tie into the story you’re about to jump into. Assuming your character hasn’t just sprung into existence, they should feel as if they’re part of the world. These new origins give our community deeper insight into not only the world we’re building, but also how history weaves together with myth in The Waylanders.”
