Cyberpunk 2077 may not have been all it was cracked up to be, at least for now, but for those that are still looking for a fulfilling experience in the genre, Evolve PR has announced a new title from the publisher Daedelic Entertainment and developer Darl Lord, officially titled Glitchpunk. This new game features a unique combination of gameplay mechanics.
The news comes from Evolve PR via a press release through their online public relations service, Terminals. Glitchpunk is described as an action RPG that plays very similarly to Grand Theft Auto 2, the second installment of the classic franchise, known for its top-down view and gameplay mechanics with twin-stick shooting and carjacking. Players play in a large city, fighting against all forms of enemies in the cyberpunk dystopia. Durg-crazed gangs, militarized police, and regular folk who just happen to have a bad attitude that can’t be tolerated today. Players utilize a large variety of vehicles and weapons to achieve their goals and fight the power.
Glitchpunk focuses on the story of an advanced android, who for reasons unknown, malfunctions. In the malfunction, she goes against her programming and raises hell against the corporate overlords and systems that keep her and her kind enslaved. In between the larger-than-life action, a solemn story is told. The themes of xenophobia, religion, and the deeper meanings of transhumanism are told, and as players can influence their surroundings, one of three endings can be achieved.
Based upon the early trailer and the concept of Glitchpunk, Glitchpunk is appearing as a more focused and older fashioned take on the cyberpunk genre, similar to titles that many may have grown up with. In addition to Grand Theft Auto 2, the trailer brings to mind titles such as Future Cop L.A.P.D, Robotron 64, and One, with each game focusing on their twin-stick combat mechanics and futuristic settings. Future Cop L.A.P.D, in particular, had a specific focus on destroying crazed gangs and armed militias of grotesque monsters in the middle of a dystopic, futuristic Los Angeles, all the while piloting a military-grade police pacification vehicle. Glitchpun’s story sounds incredibly intriguing as well.
