Today the trailer for the latest mortal Kombat Movie has finally arrived online. Starring Power Rangers and Aquaman Star Ludi Lin as Liu Kang, Supergirl’s Mehcad Brooks as Jackson “Jax” Briggs and executive produced by acclaimed filmmaker James Wan, the trailer delivers all the blood and gore you’d expect from the game.
in this trailer, we are introduced to Lewis Tan’s Cole Young, a new character chosen to represent Mid-world in the iconic tournament. Amid glimpses of Kang, Jax, Sonya and even Raiden and Subzero, The trailer overall does a great job of presenting this iteration of Mortal Kombat on-screen and setting it apart from the Robin Shou/Christopher Lambert film. Writer Oren Uziel brought up the Mark Millar adaptation Wanted in relation to the film and you can definitely see that throughout the trailer. This is a tried and true formula with Young serving as the audience surrogate into this well-loved video game. Additionally, we also get a few classic lines such as. ‘get over here.”

The movie-which Director Simon McQuoid hopes will be the beginning of a cinematic universe, according to Lin – has had something of a mythic status for both the Mortal Kombat fan community and movie fandom in general. While The original Mortal Kombat has always been something of a cult classic, the sequel was less well-received, to say the least, and the future of the franchise on the big screen in doubt for several years. That future took shape when a brief short landed online entitled Mortal Kombat Rebirth ultimately leading to this reboot following a few false starts. While the aforementioned Wanted comparison might make the adaptation a bit more predictable, fans aren’t exactly going to a Mortal Kombat film for the plot. The most important thing here is the fights something that if this trailer is anything to go by the film will have in spades especially with Lin involved. Hopefully, this will be a new beginning for the franchise in cinema and it won’t end prematurely like its predecessor.
