From animation veterans, Craig Kyle and Greg Johnson, Based on the Legendary Pictures’ Duology of the same name directed by Guillermo Del Toro and Steven DeKnight respectively, Pacific Rim: The Black takes the Kaiju-fighting action down under and centers on siblings Taylor and Hayley as they pilot a Jaeger in search of their missing parents.
Netflix has become well known for its outstanding anime offerings and judging by the trailer, Pacific Rim: The Black is no exception. More often than not, trailers set a tone for what is going to present to the audience, when they sit down to watch a film or series. Pacific Rim: The Black’s trailer does so perfectly! While The spirit and tone of the original films are on display, we also got a glimpse of the heroes who will be carrying this mythology forward. Additionally, the animation is absolutely on point and perfectly transitions the Jaegers to the format. This shouldn’t be a surprise considering how the anime influence permeated the movies from the very first frame back in 2013. But it’s still a relief to see, regardless.
For many fans, This trailer no doubt puts an end to years of uncertainty about the future of the franchise. On the press junket for Pacific Rim Uprising, Director Steven DeKnight talked about the lofty aspirations they had for the Travis Beacham and Gullerimo Del Toro-created films with the goal of turning Pacific Rim into a Star Trek/Star Wars style franchise following a hypothetical third film While that failed to come to fruition thanks to the lackluster box office reception, there was always hope that the story would continue in other narrative arenas; especially in animation and comics. When this Netflix anime was first announced, I breathed a sigh of relief, especially given that it was coming from two creators whose work I grew up watching X-Men Evolution and Wolverine and the X-Men. I particularly loved the latter, so having them put their stamp on this underrated franchise is a real treat for long time fans of Marvel Animation.
We’ll get to see if their work paid off when the series premieres on March 4th 2021. Are you ready to cancel the apocalypse once again or are you tired of battling Kaiju? Let us know on our social media pages!
