Yesterday, ViacomCBS announced that the animated series Star Trek Prodigy will move to Paramount+ and will then run on Nickelodeon. Originally the plan had been to air on the Paramount-owned kid’s network. There are no dates available for either debut as of yet, but this new animated iteration will debut sometime in 2021.
From Kevin and Dan Hageman and Star Trek czar Alex Kurtzman, Star Trek Prodigy centers on a group of teenage aliens that commandeer a beat-up starship. They explore the galaxy while embodying the ethos of everything Star Trek has represented for the last 55 years. The hope is that this release strategy will allow the show to reach all demographics. Star Trek Prodigy is the latest addition to the franchise on ViacomCBS streamer joining the likes of Star Trek Discovery, Star Trek Picard, Star Trek Lower Decks, and the upcoming Star Trek Strange New Worlds.
Many of the hardcore Star Trek fans like to say that it’s been hard to get new people into Star Trek. Alex Kurtzman is endeavoring to change that. Ever since Alex Kurtzman took over the Star Trek franchise in 2018, courtesy of a 5-year deal, his mandate had been to expand the scope of Gene Roddenberry’s legendary creation. The plan was to release a myriad of formats as a way of getting new generations involved with the franchise. Hopefully, Star Trek Prodigy will accomplish this mandate, and so much more, as Star Trek ventures further into the animated frontier.
