First revealed at E3 2019, Deathloop has captivated gamers around the world with its unorthodox gameplay. In the past, developers have added small time-loop elements to their game. In fact, there are less than fifty games where the main character is stuck in a time-loop. Three of the most notable recent time loop games are Quantum Break, Steins Gate, and The Outer Wilds. Earlier this year, it was announced that Microsoft would be purchasing Zenimax. Zenimax is the parent company of Arkane Lyons, the developer behind the upcoming game Deathloop. During IGN’s Fan Fest, Arkane Lyon’s game director, Dinga Bakaba, showed off more Deathloop.
Be aware, just because Microsoft purchased Zenimax does not mean Deathloop will be releasing on Xbox at the same time as the PS5. Phil Spencer has stated that Microsoft will honor the prior PS5 deal. So on May 21st, 2021, Deathloop will release on PS5 and PCs. During IGN’s Fan Fest, Dinga Bakaba explained what players should expect from their upcoming game.
The opening seconds show just a few ways the player can take down foes. Deathloop is a murder puzzle where you play as an assassin trapped in a time loop. If you have ever seen Groundhog’s Day or Russian Doll, you already have the general premises of what a time loop is. Though the loop resets at the end of each day, you still will have gained valuable knowledge on your targets; there is a chance for you to retain weapons and skills between each loop. You can also gain new supernatural abilities based on your experiences. The more you learn about your targets, the easier it will be to kill all 8 Visionaries.
What to Expect
The 7 Visionaries and their henchmen are not the only ones getting in your way. An assassin named Juliana will be looking for you. She is an unpredictable rival who will make your loop restart on multiple occasions. New abilities and artifacts can be found throughout Blackrift. Blackrift has a hidden secret that the player will have to uncover. Remember, time is always on your side.
