It’s a good Summer to destroy and crush your enemies. Fallen Flag Studios has confirmed the release date of a new and ambitious souls-like Eldest Souls. This pixel-art isometric action game has players pursuing vengeance in a mystical land against the Old Gods.
The news comes from the GamesRadar E3 showcase, Eldest Souls is the making of indie studio Fallen Flag Studios. This marks their first big release, since forming as a studio. The trailer for Eldest Souls tells the story of The Moon and its gifts. A cosmic event shatters the moon and spreads gifts and obsidian. Humanity rises, and pairs with The Old Gods, large deities that work harmoniously with humans in prosperity and abundance. Suddenly, an evil deity sweeps through the land, and The Old Gods turn on their humans. The world is turned to ash and dust, and the remaining humans slowly wither away. The Old Gods reign supreme and all is lost. One warrior rise with the neigh impossible task of slaying The Old Gods. His sword is forged with the last of the moon’s offerings. There is futility in his quest, but also, the chance at vengeance.
The press release reveals screenshots of Eldest Souls, indicating the game to be a souls-like action game with a Boss-rush focus. This description indicates Eldest SOls will be similar in the vein of Boss Rush games such as Furi and SInner: Sacrifice for Redemption, with a presentation reminiscent of Slain: Back from Hell. While Eldest Souls is a boss-rush mode, players will embark on separate quest lines and interact with NPC’s to learn more about the world and perhaps discover advantages to defeating The Old Gods. While no gameplay footage has been shown yet, Eldest Souls will feature customizable combat to tailor the gaming experience for the player.
A trend is continuing to grow in the rise of “souls-like” games. In the last few years, Sinner: Sacrifice For Redemption and Mortal Shell have garnered critical acclaim for what they add to the genre. This genre as punishing as it can be, rewards players for their tactical thinking and patience in outsmarting the enemy. However, there has been a growing voice requesting an “easy” mode, causing a heated debate among player bases that such a mode would contradict the intent of the creators and the gameplay experience. It’s unknown if Eldest Souls will feature such as mode, or how difficult it will be, but opportunity comes the ability to create something new and provide a different experience. Eldest Souls is shaping to be something new, bold, and exciting, whether you survived the Dark Souls trilogy or you have yet to challenge yourself.
Eldest Souls launches on PS5, PS4, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, Nintendo Switch, and PC, July 29th.
