Tetris Effect has continued to astound, amaze, and bring enlightenment to players around the world since its launch in November of 2018. The game has been universally praised for its gameplay, visual design, VR mode, and overwhelmingly positive messaging of life and humanity on the fringes of the universe. Following its release and expansion for the Xbox One and Xbox Series X in 2020, PlayStation 4 owners will now be able to join a larger community when the cross-platform multiplayer update arrives for the PS4 in July.

This news comes via a blog post in the PlayStation Blog, written by Aileen Viray, Marketing Manager at studio Enhance. The free update for Tetris Effect is detailed as being fully compatible with PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5, as well as being compatible with other platforms. Detailed in the blog post are several multiplayer gameplay modes, including modes for friends, teams, and competitive one-on-one.
Connected Mode allows 3 players to team up and defeat a Boss AI. Zone Battle is a one-on-one battle in which players must seize control of the time-stopping Zone mechanic to achieve victory. Score Attack is centered on a more traditional Tetris competition, where players compete for the highest score. Classic Score Attack takes Score Attack and makes it far more competitive, as the mode is based on the version Tetris player in World Championships. Further modes include Slow Speed, PAL Speed, and Spectator Mode.
Cross-Platform Beta
Other outlets are reporting the release of Tetris Effect for Steam, slated for release in Summer 2021. The cross-platform servers will allow for multiplayer to be played across PC, Xbox, and PlayStation servers, meaning there will undoubtedly be a large competitive base in which to play Tetris Online.
For those that wish to test the cosmic water before launch, a Beta Test will be available for all existing Tetris Effect PlayStation players. The Beta Test will be available for free for all owners of Tetris Effect. Players need to search Tetris Effect: Connected on the PlayStation Store, beginning on June 23rd. The Beta Test will be available until July 5th, 2021.
Tetris Effect has been unmistakable, one of the very best games to be released in recent memory as it stands as a celebration of Tetris and a celebration of the human spirit interfacing with the endless universe of games. The soundtrack, in particular, is an almost profound experience and was just made available on Spotify. It will be quite an observation to see how cross-platform occurs with the Tetris Effect especially with Sony’s continued resistance to such an idea. Perhaps this will further reinforce that cross-platform play is the future, whether they like it or not. Tetris Effect’s Multiplayer patch arrives July 2021.
