It takes a lot of hard work, but the day that a bird learns to fly inevitably comes. Glass Bottom Games has announced their release date for the highly anticipated skateboard game, SkateBIRD, which will be launching on Nintendo Switch, Xbox, and PC Thursday, September 16th, 2021. The long-anticipated skateboarding game is set to fly for players everywhere.
The news comes from Bailey Matthieu on behalf of the PR firm Stride PR. SkateBIRD is a new and ambitious skateboarding game, where the birds are let out of their cages and ready to tear the pavement, with ollies, kickflips, and front slides. In SkateBIRD, players choose from one of 30 different types of birds, competing in missions to rack up a high score. Missions take place in bird-sized skateparks, from a messy bedroom to secret rooftops. From ramps to poles, there’s plenty of opportunities for players to score their way to victory. After completing certain missions, players may accessorize their birds and stylize them. After all, it’s important to look fly on the pavement.
What is SkateBIRD
SkateBIRD has been in development since 2018. Following a successful Kickstarter campaign, the game was slated to release on Nintendo Switch, PC, and Xbox in December 2019, with a release set for 2020. In July 2020, the game was delayed not necessarily due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but because of the decision to include a single-player mode. With the game locking down a release date, the game is content-complete and ready to go.
SkateBIRD finds itself filling an unexpected void. There haven’t been many skateboarding games in recent memory, other than last year’s stupendous release of Tony Hawk Pro Skater 1+2. Tony Hawk Pro Skater 1+2′s success went strong, but it is confident to say the ongoing investigation into workplace toxicity at Activision Blizzard has severely marred the appeal of purchasing Tony Hawk Pro Skater 1+2 for new platforms and existing platforms. In the meantime, there are niche skateboarding titles available, from Ollie Ollie to Wavebreak, as well as games such as Skate Story. SkateBIRD joins that list of skateboarding games hoping to make a strong impact on players, but based upon the feedback and overall hype, SkateBIRD is shaping to be a game that doesn’t fly but soar.
