“The spice must flow” is one of the most famous quotes from the book Dune. At The Game Awards, publisher Funcom and developer Shiro Games showcased a teaser trailer, which announced Dune: Spice Wars. Spice Wars is a real-time strategy game with 4X elements based on Frank Herbert’s groundbreaking novel. The game will be released on early access next year, exclusively on PC.
RTS Roots
A cool thing to note is that Dune: Spice Wars is being created by the same team that released critically acclaimed RTS Northgard in 2017. Northgard is a game I put in countless hours in and really enjoyed. If you play Northgard, and you enjoy it as much as I did, you should expect good things when Dune: Spice Wars releases. The game is going to be based more on Frank Herbert’s classic novel, rather than the more recent movie adaptations. There will be some similarities that players and fans will notice between the movie and the game.
“The Dune universe is the perfect setting for a strategy game. You have major factions, such as House Atreides and House Harkonnen, with a rivalry that spans back centuries. You have political intrigue, deception, and warfare, all centered around what is by far the most valuable substance in the universe: Spice. And then there is the stage itself, Arrakis, a hostile planet full of hidden wonders to explore. Massive sandworms that can devour entire armies, sandstorms, spice harvesters, all of which our amazing team of developers have incorporated into this game.”
CEO of Shiro Games Sebastian Vidal
Dune: Spice Wars will have several playable factions, each with its own strengths and weaknesses, as well as multiple ways to achieve your ultimate goal; control of the spice on Arrakis. You can deploy agents to sabotage, assassinate and spy on your opponents, use political means to influence the Lands and pass beneficial resolutions, amass incredible wealth, and simply overwhelm the other houses through economic and technological supremacy. You can also opt-in for open war.
Campaign at Launch with multiplayer coming
There would also be campaign and multiplayer throughout the early access period, I can’t wait to jump on this game when it comes out. The single-player campaign will have players write their own stores based on the characters and factions they played, the way the player chooses will determine how they win the game through economic power, diplomatic approach, or going all-out war to control the spice. No matter what approach the player chooses there will always be repercussions, and in the end, there can only be one faction that controls Dune and the flow of Spice. Multiplayer will be coming during the early access period but there is not much information about it, hopefully, after the game is launched on early access, we will know more of what is to come.
This is a game to keep an eye out especially for fans who enjoy the Dune Series but also people who love RTS games like me, last Dune game I played was Emperor, Battle for Dune so I am very much looking forward to what this game is going to be about and how it plays, from what I have seen on the trailer, this is a game I can see myself playing over and over.
