It’s a good day to relax, even when the world has ended. Sampo Toyssy of 10tons Studio Ltd is proud to announce his latest game, Dysmantle, which launches today on PlayStation 4 and Xbox Series X, with a port coming to Nintendo Switch and mobile fairly soon. Dysmantle is a different, more experimental take for 10tons, whose previous works includes Tesla vs Lovecraft and the cyberpunk twin-stick shooters Neon Chrome and Jydge.
The News
The news comes from Sampo Toyssy of 10tons ltd and is accompanied by a launch trailer and images. Dysmantle is an open-world RPG, where players fight, construct, and chill, all on an island swarming with the undead. Dysmantle describes itself as a game that is about survival but encourages players to enjoy the bittersweet post-apocalypse. As a survival RPG, Dysmantle has everything one would come to expect in such a genre. Harvesting and gathering items, crafting, and survival are the core elements, but the key in Dysmantle is the break everything, and that is literally everything. Players can break more than 99% of the objects within the game world, according to the press release.
Elements of the game were greatly inspired by titles, such as The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Dark Souls, but this isn’t all doom, gloom, and maddening punishment. Instead, the challenges in Dysmantle are meant to be rewarding and meaningful, as players fight to survive and escape the dangerous island. Players have free reign as to what to do. Players may fight the undead hordes or go hunting for food. There is a time to sit and relax to fish and a time to craft a new weapon to survive.
In Dysmantle, the zombie apocalypse doesn’t have to be so dark and grim, in fact, it can be nice. In addition to the launch, Dysmantle will be heading to the Nintendo Switch and mobile platforms at a later time. Given that several of 10tons games have been successfully ported to the Nintendo Switch, it shouldn’t take long to see the game on these platforms.
History & Thoughts
Dysmantle is a significant step for 10tons, as this marks the first survival RPG. Previously, many of the games under 10tons were twin-stick shooters, beginning with the ’90s inspired Crimsonland in 2013. After finding success with Crimsonland, 10tons developed a spaceship shoot-’em up, Xenoraid, filled with challenging space battles and huge bosses. 10tons achieved great acclaim with the release of the well-received, and a personal favorite of mine, Neon Chrome which took the frantic and satisfying 3D action 10tons was known for into a vivid cyberpunk world inspired by the likes of RoboCop, Blade Runner, and Terminator for an immensely satisfying 1 to 2 player shooting experience.
Shortly after, 10ton leaned hard into the RoboCop and Judge Dredd aesthetic with the appropriate titled, Jydge putting players into a lawless futuristic world where peace and order must be restored. Time Recoil, a follow-up from Jydge, had players fighting the past and future, using slow-motion mechanics to survive. Following Time Recoil, 10tons shifted to a more fantasy and steampunk stance, with the likes of Tesla vs Lovecraft and Tesla Force trading ray guns for electrically powered cannons and cyborgs for alien eldritch creatures. Undead Horde introduces strategic and RPG elements to the established formula, encouraging players to raise revenge on the world of the living. With Dysmantle 10tons makes the big push for endless destruction, which isn’t a feature seen in most games in the present day.
The Launch
Seeing Dysmantle launch today is a solid sight to me, and should be a reminder of a tenacious attitude towards making games. From small phone apps to a survival RPG, it’s been quite the journey for 10tons, and one of respect. The studio sought to make games that were phone and enjoyable, classic, and to the point. Stick to the roots, then grow from the foundation, is a mantra I’d give the studio. Over the span of many years, 10tons has made delightful little titles, and I encourage players to play Dysmantle for a pure, unbridled gaming experience.
Dysmantle is now available for the PlayStation 4/5 and Xbox platforms for the price of $19.99 USD. Will you survive the undead?
