The Doctor and Donna are about to step back onto the TARDIS. Deadline reports that David Tennant and Catherine Tate will be returning to their iconic roles next year just in time for the show’s 60th anniversary. Details on what their returns will entail are scarce at the moment. You can read Russell T. Davies’ comments on the matter below.
“It looks impossible – first, we announce a new Doctor, and then an old Doctor, along with the wonderful Donna, what on earth is happening? Maybe this is a missing story. Or a parallel world. Or a dream, or a trick, or a flashback. The only thing I can confirm is that it’s going to be spectacular, as two of our greatest stars reunite for the battle of a lifetime.”
Past Doctors returning to the show have been something of a time-honored tradition for Decades with Patrick Troughton being the most prolific returnee following the conclusion of his initial run. During the modern era of Doctor Who, both Christopher Eccleston and David Tennant had been rumored for a return at various points with Tennant ultimately appearing alongside Matt Smith in the fiftieth anniversary special Day of the Doctor. With the return of Davies as showrunner, there was a lot of speculation about whether or not Tennant would return alongside his former boss with some even speculating he would return full time prior to the announcement of Ncuti Gatwa. Having both Tennant and Tate back on screen together is sure to be a treat for Whovians and I can’t wait to hear more about what Davies has in store for all of us.
