Ncuti Gatwa Cast as the 14th Doctor in Doctor Who

The next iteration of everybody’s favorite timelord has finally been announced! Deadline reports via the show’s official Twitter account that  Sex Education’s Ncuti Gatwa will be the fourteenth doctor, picking up the Sonic Screwdriver following Jodie Whittaker’s upcoming exit. You can read Quotes from both Gatwa and returning showrunner Russell T. Davies, respectively, below.

“Russell T Davies is almost as iconic as the Doctor himself and being able to work with him is a dream come true. His writing is dynamic, exciting, incredibly intelligent and fizzing with danger. An actor’s metaphorical playground.

“The entire team have been so welcoming and truly give their hearts to the show. And so as much as it’s daunting, I’m aware I’m joining a really supportive family. Unlike the Doctor, I may only have one heart but I am giving it all to this show.”

“The future is here and it’s Ncuti! Sometimes talent walks through the door and it’s so bright and bold and brilliant, I just stand back in awe and thank my lucky stars. Ncuti dazzled us, seized hold of the Doctor and owned those TARDIS keys in seconds. It’s an honour to work with him, and a hoot, I can’t wait to get started. I’m sure you’re dying to know more, but we’re rationing ourselves for now, with the wonderful Jodie’s epic finale yet to come. But I promise you, 2023 will be spectacular!”

The announcement of a new doctor is always a momentous occasion for the franchise, the lead up becoming one of intense speculation and scrutiny. This go-round everyone from Hugh Grant to Olly Alexander was rumored to be in the running for the iconic role, with the Notting Hill stars camp denying the rumor and Davies denying the Alexander rumor. Gatwa doesn’t have a huge CV but it’s clear he’s a star on the rise with the aforementioned Sex Education (for which he has won multiple BAFTAs) and the upcoming Margot Robbie/Ryan Gosling adaptation of Mattel’s Barbie being his most prominent credits Ever since it was announced that Davies was returning to helm the show I’ve been excited for what’s to come in Dr. Who. After reading what Gatwa had to say on the subject, it’s safe to say the timelord is in good hands as the franchise approaches its 60th anniversary.

Are you excited for Gatwa to come aboard the Tardis or are you going to check out his work on sex education first? Let us know in the comments and stay tuned to Marooners’ Rock for more TV and Video Game news!
