Adult Swim’s immensely popular Rick and Morty series has continued to innovate the adult cartoon genre. What initially started out as a crude Back To The Future parody, has quickly climbed to new heights. Rick and Morty creator Justin Roiland has never been afraid to deviate away from the show’s norm. The typical interdimensional exploits of alcoholic scientist Rick Sanchez and his grandson Morty Smith often result in mind-bending, reality-altering, antics. That said, the show has never been afraid to deviate away from its traditional formula, to offer up something new for fans. Back in March of 2020, Adult Swim’s official YouTube page premiered Samurai & Shogun. This one-off acted as the first of 4 Rick and Morty anime shorts, produced and directed by actual Japanese studios. Today Adult Swim officially greenlit an all-new spinoff series, Rick and Morty: The Anime, from Japanese director Takashi Sano.

Director Takashi Sano is known for his previous animation work, such as the Tower of God anime and the Fire Emblem: Three Houses video game. Sano is no stranger to the franchise, however, as he was the key animator in 2 of the anime shorts. Both shorts, Rick and Morty vs. Genocider and Summer Meets God, proved to be immensely popular, generating a cumulative 10 million views. With the success of the shorts, Unlike the previous shorts, Rick and Morty: The Anime will be releasing as a full-fledged series. The anime will adapt themes, characters, and events featured in the mainline series, however, standing alone as its own entity. While information on the show is currently sparse, fans can expect a similar style to that of the previous animations. Sano mentioned that the anime will feature an all-new story revolving around the Smith household.
