The creative team behind the next Avengers film is starting to come into focus. Variety reports that Shang Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings director Destin Daniel Cretton will be at the helm of Earth’s mightiest heroes’ next adventure. The news comes on the hills of a flurry of Marvel announcements at Comic-Con. Marvel President Kevin Feige announced that phases 4, 5, and 6 would be known as the Multiverse Saga. The story would culminate with not one but two Avengers films: Avengers: The Kang Dynasty and the long-rumored Avengers: Secret Wars, though there’s no word on who is directing the latter.
While the Russo brothers were rumored to be returning to the fold for the next Avengers film, they quickly shot that down – something that had been further corroborated by Feige himself this past weekend. As for Cretton, his resume extends beyond the aforementioned Shang Chi film with critical hits such as Short Term 12 starring Captain Marvel star Brie Larson. So, it seems that Cretton and Larson are teaming again following the after credits sequence of Shang Chi. Currently, he’s also developing a Wonder Man series for Marvel.
In addition to Cretton, Marvel has also confirmed directors for various other films in recent weeks, with Julius Ansah directing Captain America: New World Order (dated for May 3, 2024) and Jake Shier for Thunderbolts, the latter with a script from regular Marvel writer Eric Pearson and scheduled to be release on July 26, 2024.
Despite the divisive nature of Phase 4 thus far, after Comic-Con and the announcement of Cretton staying in the fold for Avengers: The Kang Dynasty, the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe seems bright and I can’t wait to see where the Multiverse saga ends up with Cretton at the helm.
