Digimon Survive – What to Expect on Launch

Last month, Bandai Namco Entertainment released a new trailer for their upcoming game, Digimon Survive. After a decently long wait, Digimon Survive is now here. In the release date trailer, the trailer description cites the following,

“When Takuma Momozuka finds himself lost on a school camping trip, he’ll be transported to a mysterious and dangerous world full of creatures called Digimon. On his journey, he’ll meet many companions, Digimon, and humans alike! Join Takuma as he searches for a way back home in this visual novel with turn-based battles.”

So what do you need to know before you purchase Digimon Survive?

Digimon Survive Title Screen

After five years of development, Digimon Survive is coming on July 29th, 2022. So let’s go over what you need to know before you buy the latest Digimon game. The game is a celebration of the Digimon anime with a darker spin; it will have more of a JRPG feeling with the player’s decisions impacting the story, their partners, and the world around them. The game in itself plays more like a tactical turn-based RPG with the player moving their partners to select areas for combat. The story elements of the game are more of a visual novel compared to a linear dialog.

Based on the decisions the player makes will control what Digivolutions will be available. Similar to other Anime titles, the game is in native Japanese with some subbed dialog; this means the player will have to pay attention to the dialog rather than just listening and making decisions after the dialog is done. Cutscenes are animated and have a similar style to the animated series. Actual combat in the game does not start until you are about an hour in.

Breakdown

Expect Digimon Survive to be 60% Narrative RPG and the other 40% to be tactical turned based. If you have not played a tactical RPG before, you will need to manage your partners and move them around the battlefield. Each Digital monster has set health and special Power (Mana). Most attacks will need a line of sight to hurt the enemy.

Knowing this, will you purchase Digimon Survive?
