Disney’s Gargoyles to Continue with New Comics

Gargoyles

Dynamite Entertainment announced at Comic-Con that they will be creating new graphic novels and periodicals set in the world of Disney’s fan favorite Gargoyles Universe. Collaborating with creator Greg Weisman, these new comics will function as both a new season of the show as well as a solid entry point for newcomers. In addition, they will be releasing back issues of previous Gargoyles comics. Jimmy Palmiotti, Amanda Connor, Joe Maidiura, Grant Miehn, Martin Pasko, and Mort Todd are all involved with the series alongside Weisman.

The Disney-owned Gargoyles franchise is centered on the surviving members of Castle Wyvern following a raid by the Viking leader, Hakon in the year 994. When a misunderstanding causes our heroes to be put under a sleeping curse for a thousand years, billionaire industrialist David Xanatos (voiced by Star Trek’s Jonathan Frakes) awakens them in 1990s Manhattan. Goliath, Brooklyn Hudson, Lexington Broadway, and Bronx must adapt to protecting their new ‘castle’, Manhattan. The show ran for three seasons from 1994 to 1997, with the majority of the final season (save for the premiere) being considered non-canon by Weisman and the fanbase.

This announcement is the culmination of years of campaigning by the fans with Weisman often reminding everyone that if they continue to keep binging Gargoyles on Disney+, good things would happen. While the assumption was that we would get something akin to X-Men 97, this is equally as awesome considering how much comic book material we’ve gotten over the years. Of particular note is the Slave Labor Graphics continuation consisting of Clan Building volumes 1 and 2, the latter of which ended on Brooklyn returning to the 1990s following his time traveling journeys with Phoenix Gate.

Dynamite is no stranger to adapting IPs to the comics medium – whether it’s Kevin Smith’s Green Hornet adaptation or Jim Butcher’s Dresden Files novels. They have no trouble with Gargoyles, so I can’t wait to see what Weisman, Palmiotti, Connor et al come up with when the first issue releases later this year.

Brett has always been a huge fan of movies, particularly anything involving the DC Universe, Scooby-Doo, or gangster films. When it comes to gaming, he’s up for anything as long as it involves fighting games, Yu-Gi-Oh!, or Pokémon. He likes pretty much anything, except pineapple on pizza. . . His ultimate goal is to be a novelist.
