Welcome to a platformer with no platforms. After making a solid debut last year on Steam, innovative platformer Ynglet has now made its way to the Xbox platform. The game comes form developer Niflas, and has created mesmerizing and engaging platformers, such as Knytt Underground. Ynglet arrives to Xbox after achieving a ” Very Positive” rating out of 216 reviews on Steam.
The Xbox uploaded a launch trailer to its YouTube channel, announcing the launch of Ynglet. Ynglet puts players into what can be described as an alien space dolphin. in his world far beyond the realms of time and space, players play and swim as this dolphin. There are no platforms or even a jump button; players move seamlessly through bubbles, but each time they leave a bubble, the alien dolphin falls down. The trailer shows a kaleidoscope of color through various levels, as well as new abilities. Ynglet seems to be inspired by the world of micro organisms, as well as computer circuitry and space. Players traverse these strange and majestic worlds on a tale of survival and existence. Powering this experience is a dynamic and – as the developer describes it – a “needlessly complicated” soundtrack that is fully reactive to the player and the environment. The Xbox release comes content-complete from the Steam version, with new levels and features.
The Xbox platform has been a new and exciting ecosystem for lesser known indies. Compared to the other two platforms, I’ve often found more appealing indie games on Xbox than on Nintendo or PlayStation. That isn’t to say that the other aforementioned platforms are without gems, but I regularly see the Xbox platform go out of its way to give indies the attention and care they deserve. Ynglet is another game I hadn’t heard of before until writing this, and I definitely look forward to this ambitious experience.
Ynglet is now available on Xbox Series X/S and Xbox One.
